SWEET SUCCESS (1950 – 1970)

The Barkath – Hacks story began in the mid – 50s when Haji Abu Backer seeing the potential in Hacks medicated cough sweets, contacted the manufacturers in England and convinced them that there was a market in this region. Impressed by his assessment, they appointed Barkath Stores as the sole agent for Hacks for Malaya and Singapore.

Barkath Stores also imported quality Elkes biscuits and Lyons ice-cream from England.

In 1965, as a result of shipment delays, high duties and price competition, Haji Abu Backer persuaded the Hacks manufacturers, White Hudson Pte Ltd, to enter into a joint-venture with Barkath Stores to produce the sweets locally.

Haji Abu Backer's eldest son, Barkath Ali was sent to England to study all aspects of the manufacturing and marketing of Hacks. A year later, he returned and successfully helped to launch Hacks Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

At about the same time, Barkath Stores became the distributor for Sunquick orange concentrate produced by Co-Ro Food A/S of Denmark and marketed in more than 80 countries throughout the world.
